Description
Well, we didn't start out as a fabric shop, that's for sure. People, Places, and Quilts started 22 years ago as a very small store in the heart of Downtown Summerville selling folk art and vintage quilts. The shop expanded into an adjoining space and started selling primitives - what my Dad called "junk" but actually is furniture with character (or attitude)!
When the local fabric store closed shop, a customer said, "you should open a fabric shop!" Although I had always quilted (since I was 20) I had no desire to open such a shop. The truth is, fractions were scary. I mean, the thought of selling 1/2 yard of fabric at $6.95 a yard perhaps give a discount, then adding 5% tax.... well, that was too much to deal with. However, lack of money and no experience wasn't scary at all! Minor details.
Some things have changed since the beginning...fabric costs and sales tax have gone up, but we are for still in the same building, with 6,000 sq feet of space for fabrics of all kinds, books & patterns, notions, Janome sewing machines, "go" cutters, samples, sitting area, office space and have some local folk art and old linens and quilts occasionally. We welcome all to visit, shop and spend time with us. Dogs are welcome and we have had a stray cat wander in and one that came in a stroller. And, in the early days, a large water turtle crawled up out of a nearby stream and walked right down the sidewalk! True! Blessings!
