Event Details
Join the City of Charleston and Charleston Parks Conservancy for a public event and celebration on Saturday, April 28, 2018 to rededicate Charleston’s Waterfront Park in honor of former Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr.
Before he left office in early 2016, Charleston City Council renamed the park “Joe Riley Waterfront Park” in honor of his central role in creating the City’s most visited and iconic park.
Since that time the City and the Conservancy have undertaken a project to recognize the new park’s name with new signage and to honor the former mayor’s dedication to parks and public space with new commemorative elements in the park. That project will be unveiled at the ceremony on the morning of April 28.
The event will be held on the park’s Vendue Plaza and include remarks from Mayor John Tecklenburg and former Mayor Riley and a performance by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.
A major sponsor of the rededication project and event is Lowe Enterprises, which is planning a major expansion of the park in conjunction with the construction of a full-service hotel at 176 Concord St. on the current site of the South Carolina State Ports Authority offices.
